Background and Aim: In addition to physical problems, the psychological issues of patients with chronic headaches should also be considered. The present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) on pain anxiety and quality of life in women with chronic headaches.
Materials and Methods: This semi-experimental study employed a pre-test, post-test, and follow-up design with a control group. The statistical population included women with chronic headaches in Tabriz in 2025. A total of 45 participants were selected through purposive sampling and randomly assigned to three groups (each with 15 participants). The experimental groups received their respective interventions over eight sessions, while the control group received no treatment. Data were collected using the Pain Anxiety Symptoms Scale (PASS-20) and the SF Quality of Life Questionnaire. The results were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni post hoc tests.
Results: There were no significant differences between the experimental and control groups in pain anxiety and quality of life scores at the pre-test stage (P > 0.05). Both MBSR and ACT significantly improved pain anxiety and quality of life compared to the control group at the post-test stage (P < 0.001). These effects remained stable during the follow-up phase (P < 0.001). No significant differences were found between the two treatment groups in terms of their effects on pain anxiety and quality of life during post-test and follow-up (P > 0.05).
Conclusion: Based on the findings, both Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy effectively reduce pain anxiety and improve the quality of life in women with chronic headaches.
