Background and Objective: Multiple sclerosis or MS is a chronic and degenerative disease of the central nervous system that has had an increasing prevalence in the last two decades. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of positive psychotherapy on health anxiety and pain self-efficacy in patients with multiple sclerosis.
Method: The research method was a quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test type with a control group. The statistical population of the study included patients with multiple sclerosis of the Iranian MS Association, of whom 30 people were selected through purposive sampling from among those referring to the Iranian MS Association in the summer of 2024 and were randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups (15 people in each group). The research instruments were Salkowski et al.'s health anxiety (2002) and Nicholas's pain self-efficacy (1990). The experimental group underwent 8 sessions of 60-minute positive psychotherapy, and the control group did not receive any intervention. The research data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance using SPSS version 24 software.
Findings: The results showed that positive psychotherapy had an effect on health anxiety (F=33.51, P=0.001) and pain self-efficacy (F=18.26, P=0.001) in patients with multiple sclerosis.
Conclusion: According to these results, it can be said that positive psychotherapy is effective in reducing health anxiety and increasing pain self-efficacy, and this treatment can be used for patients with multiple sclerosis.
