Abstract
Background: Chronic neck pain is a common musculoskeletal disorder that is often associated with persistent pain and disability. Pain neuroscience education (PNE) has been considered as a novel approach based on the biopsychosocial model to improve patients' perception of pain and reduce psychological factors associated with it. The aim of this review was to investigate and analyze the effectiveness of pain neuroscience education in combination with other therapeutic interventions on pain and disability in people with chronic neck pain.
Methods: A literature search was conducted including articles published from 2015 to 2025. PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and ProQuest databases were used to identify relevant studies. Keywords included (randomized controlled trial, pain neuroscience education, chronic neck pain, nonspecific neck pain, PNE). The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 tool.
Results: A total of 7 randomized controlled trials met the inclusion criteria. These studies mainly studied the effect of PNE in combination with other interventions, and the positive effects of this combination on these subjects were recorded in these studies.
Conclusion: PNE, as part of a therapeutic approach, can play an effective role in the management of chronic neck pain. By improving patients' understanding of pain mechanisms and reducing adverse cognitive-emotional factors, this intervention paves the way for more active participation in treatment and indirectly improving pain and disability
