Aims and background: Mastectomy causes women to experience psychological problems, including increased pain anxiety and decreased quality of life. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness acceptance & commitment therapy on pain anxiety and quality of life in women with breast surgery experience.
Materials and Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental with a pretest-posttest design and follow-up with a control group. In total, 30 women who met the inclusion criteria were selected through purposive sampling from among all women who had undergone mastectomy in Tabriz in 2024 and were undergoing radiation therapy, and were randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups. Members of the experimental group received their specific treatment in eight sessions of 1.5-hour, however, the control group did not receive treatment. Both groups answered the 20-question McCracken and Dhingra pain anxiety and the 36-question quality of life questionnaires, before, after, and 4 months after the intervention. Data were Analyzed using ANOVA with repeated measures.
Results: There was no significant difference between the pain anxiety and quality of life in the experimental and control groups in the pretest (P<0.05). The results showed that acceptance and commitment therapy, compared to the control group, reduced and increased pain anxiety and quality of life in women with breast surgery experience in the post-test, respectively (P<0.001). The effect of acceptance and commitment therapy on pain anxiety and quality of life was lasting at the follow-up stage (P<0.001).
Conclusion: It seems that acceptance & commitment therapy can reduce pain anxiety and increase quality of life in women with with breast surgery experience, therefore it is likely to be a useful treatment strategy to improve the pain anxiety and quality of life in women with with breast surgery experience.
